Carillon for Joanna is the first published solo in over 150 years to have been composed specifically for the Welsh triple harp. Inspired by the memory of the remarkable triple harp playing of Nansi Richards Jones, Telynores Maldwyn (1888-1979), and in particular her performances of her own variations in traditional style on the hymn-tune Sicilian Mariners and the well-known Bells of Aberdovey, this carillon is based on the Welsh hymn-tune Joanna. Whereas in its present form it can be played only on the triple harp, a version for pedal harp solo is included as the penultimate movement of Ann Griffiths' suite A Welsh Knot (Adlais 1979). |
