The German composer, Friedrich von Flotow (1812 - 1883) is best remembered for his opera Martha and in particular the aria 'M'appari' - 'She appeared to me' which in this edition has been transcribed for harp by John Thomas.

Born in Teutendorf to an aristocratic family, Flotow studied the at the Paris Conservatoire and was influenced by Rossini, Donizetti, Gounod and Offenbach. Martha was first performed in Vienna at the Theater am Kärntnertor Wien in November 1847.
